Jill Beninato
Jill Beninato is a professionally trained artist who made the jump from jewelry designer to photographer. She is partial to furry four-legged subjects. Not only does she take wonderful candid shots of un-suspecting pooches, but she also turns many of her photos into wonderful collage art peices. In her bio, she says that her subjects posses a kind of "in the moment" energy that captivates her and makes for true, honest photographs.

In addition to photographing dogs candidly "in their element", Beninato takes these already-intriguing photos a step further, by turning them into works of art using a collage style. These works make use of not only her own photos, but also old-timey black-and-white photos combined with rich colors and text. Beninato has a wonderfully unique portfolio. Check it out at Sit Stay Smile and then visit her Cafe Press Shop for some great gift items featuring her work.

Chet Phillips
Chet Phillips is a freelance illustrator who has worked with a number of big-name clients. His professional work is outstanding, but of course, we here at Breed Specific are amazed by his personal work, which is pretty much all about dogs (...and cats).

Although Chet's illustrations are done digitally, they look strikingly similar to linoleum prints. The thick black lines and saturated colors create works of art that you can't help but notice.

The most striking feature of Chet's illustrations is that the dogs in his work are often portrayed as humans. Check out this Boston Terrier enjoying a day at the spa. And his Wrestle Pets are way too funny to miss. Chet's works remind us that dogs are just small furry people, each with their own personality.

In addition to his comical illustrations, Chet also produces some "digital woodblock prints" of both dogs and cats in traditional Japanese-style prints.

We are very excited to have discovered this fellow Dallas, Texas dog artist. Be sure to check out his web site which features all his work and ways to purchase some of his prints. And, of course, take a peek at his Cafe Press Shop for tons of fun doggie merchandise.

Mary Beacon
Mary Beacon's love for dogs began when she was a young girl. Her first attendance at a dog show sparked her appreciation for the purebred dog, and has lead to her career as a dog artist today. She runs the Tumbleweed Studio, where she produces original works of art featuring most any breed you can imagine.

Mary's portraits have a very vintage feel to them. The colors are very subdued, and often her paintings are monochromatic. She often paints dogs outdoors, and therefore uses a lot of greens and yellows. Her painting technique is very soft, yet she captures the strength of each breed.

Mary has a great Cafe Press Shop filled with tons of breed items, so be sure and take a peek!

Svetlana Novikova
Svetlana Novikova is a Russian born artist who now lives near Austin, Texas, and paints vibrant animal portraits using acrylic. Here at Breed Specific, we are most drawn to her dog portraits, but she also paints a variety of other animals, including cats and horses.

There is nothing dull about Novikova's breed paintings. Her use of bright color demands attention. In many of her works, the dog and the background seem to fit together perfectly, and each is an extension of the other. This does not distract from the dog, but rather, the artist's use of color and texture incorporates the subject matter into the negative space to create a complete composition.

Be sure to check out her Cafe Press Shop and pick up some products featuring your favorite breed!

Maggie Perez Weakley
Maggie Perez Weakely, the artist behind maggiesangels.com, is a true animal lover who brings us some of the best breed portraits out there. Her paintings are bright and cheerful- as you look through her gallery you can't help but smile- because that's what all the dogs in her portraits are doing!

Maggie says on her web site, "my artwork is for all who share the colorful, wonderful companionship these great creatures bring to us every day." By reading her full bio, we found out that this artist is a true animal lover, and you can definitely see this through her artwork. Its all about expressing the joy that animals bring to our lives. Every dog Maggie paints has that happy grin that dogs flash when you walk through the front door.

Artistically speaking, Maggie's work is simple and bold. Bright, solid backgrounds not only add to the playfulness of her portraits, but they also make her subjects stand out and be the focal point of the composition. There are no distracting background elements- its all about the dog.

Check out Maggie's Cafe Press Shop. She has a lot of great products featuring many different breeds (and even some cats, too!).

Ann Kallal
Ann Kallal is a well known artist that has been around for quite awhile. Her studio "Maggie Ross Designs" was named after her Westie (Maggie) and her Scottie (Ross). We were immediately drawn to her Scottish Terrier art, as it really captures the feisty spirit of the breed.

Ann creates very handsome and traditional breed work. Her dogs are so wonderfully life like you think they may start barking at you or wagging their tails. She has a unique ability to celebrate the aesthetic qualities that make a certain breed special to their humans. She paints mostly classic full-body or bust shots that add to the elegance of her artwork. She has worked with a wide variety of breeds and yet we are quite partial to her Terriers. A Scott herself she also has a Cafe Press shop devoted to Highland Dancers.

Kathy Weller
Kathy's work is soft and whimsical yet when viewing her comp sketches on her site you see that she has a strong sense of line and pretty tight control over her pencil. Her final paintings seem light and effortless. Her fondness for her subject matter is obvious. She is one of the few illustrators I have see that can combine "sweet" with just enough sophistication to make you hungry for more dessert.

Linda O'Neill
Linda has been on the dog art scene for quite awhile and her work seems to be evolving each time I visit her site. This gal has a strong sense of composition and a real love for color. Her work is slightly traditional in that her dogs have coats with hues that are pretty true to reality. She brings in a wide range of contemporary colors however in her backgrounds and often includes toys, food bowls or other doggy related props for added interest. Be sure and check out her non-doggy works as well. Linda is a very well rounded artist that just happens to love dogs.

Artist Ron Krajewski
When we first came across Ron's work, we were amazed by the amount of different breeds he has captured in his artwork. This guy stays rather busy. After spending some time on his portfolio web site, we found out that he also paints cats and wildlife. Ron's paintings are done in watercolor, and he is able to achieve a color palette that is very rich and vibrant. One thing noticeably missing from Ron's no-frills web site is an artist bio. We would love to know more about this talented artist. All we can tell you is to to check him out for yourself.

Ron has a really cool shop at Cafe Press featuring some of his artwork. Be sure to stop by and pick something up!

Artist Kevin McCormick
This design oriented young man has built a really fun and silly site called Obey the Pure Breed. Taking heavy inspiration from the well known street artist Shepard Fairey (Obey the Giant), Kevin has created a fun place for dog lovers with a sense of humor. Paying homage to Fairey's propaganda concept, McCormick has taken a similar idea to the dog loving masses, for more consumer oriented purposes. His Cafe Press shop offers a wide variety of gift items, although we feel the best picks are by far his dog breed posters.

His bold and flat poster style art of pure breed dogs harkens back to the cold war and Soviet poster design. The site is sprinkled with absurd news stories of various breeds taking over and dominating society. This site is really fun, and worth a peek.
